Carbon Capture: The Next Industrial Revolution Hidden Inside India's Factories

Carbon capture reduces industrial emissions by trapping CO₂ before release, creating opportunities across engineering, energy, chemicals, and infrastructure sectors. A factory chimney looks ordinary. But what if that smoke became a valuable resource instead of pollution? That's the idea behind Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). Imagine a steel plant or cement factory as a giant fireplace. Every day it releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere. CCUS installs a new "filter" that captures much of this CO₂ before it escapes. But capturing carbon is only the first chapter. The real challenge begins after capture. The CO₂ must be purified, compressed, transported through dedicated pipelines, and either reused by industries or stored thousands of metres underground inside suitable rock formations for hundreds of years. India has already taken its first steps. Projects by NTPC $NTPCGREEN , JSW Steel, and chemical manufacturers are using captured CO₂ to produce methanol, chemicals, and food-grade carbon dioxide. While these projects reduce fresh emissions, permanent underground storage remains India's next major engineering challenge. Recognising this opportunity, the Government has announced a ₹20,000 crore CCUS Mission, supporting technologies across power, steel, cement, refineries and chemical industries. This isn't just an environmental story.
