INDIA’S UPI GOES GLOBAL: ZIMBABWE LOOKS TO INDIA
Imagine a country where banks, mobile-money operators and fintechs all speak different payment “languages.”
Now imagine connecting them through one real-time digital payment infrastructure.
That is the opportunity Zimbabwe is exploring with NPCI International, the international arm of India’s NPCI. Zimbabwe’s central bank says negotiations for a UPI-based national payment system could conclude by October 31, 2026.
The proposed system could connect banks, fintechs and mobile-money providers, making payments faster, more interoperable and potentially cheaper. Cross-border payments and remittances could become a later opportunity.
The bigger story is not just Zimbabwe.
India’s UPI processed 24.5 billion transactions in August 2026, with 752 banks live on the platform, highlighting the scale of the underlying ecosystem.
