Transformer demand is entering a multi-year super-cycle driven by ageing grids, renewable expansion, raw-material shortages, and long execution backlogs.
India’s power cuts during storms often come with a familiar sound a transformer blowing out. But behind that noise lies a massive global shortage.
Transformers are the “pressure regulators” of electricity. They make high-voltage power travel long distances efficiently and step it down safely for homes. Every solar park, wind corridor, refinery, metro line, EV charger and data centre needs them.
For decades, demand was sleepy. Utilities simply stretched old transformers far beyond their intended life. Then the renewable boom arrived. Old units had to be replaced, and new green energy needed thousands of fresh transformers. But the world never built enough factories, and key raw materials like CRGO steel and specialised copper come from only a handful of global suppliers. Lead times jumped from months to years.
India now sits at the centre of this crunch. Our target of 500 GW non-fossil power by 2030 means unprecedented grid expansion. Substations are overloaded, many transformers are operating past safe limits, and high-voltage manufacturers are booked out for 12–24 months. The problem isn’t orders — it’s execution capacity.
This is creating a structural multi-year opportunity for specialised Indian manufacturers in medium- and high-voltage segments, where margins and entry barriers are higher.
