HAL is emerging as one of India’s most compelling long-term industrial stories

HAL
rooted in defence, aerospace and national strategic importance. With the government committed to indigenisation and self-reliance in defence manufacturing, HAL finds itself sitting at the heart of a structural growth wave. A recent major win underscores this: HAL signed a contract for 97 LCA Mk1A fighter jets, valued at around ₹62,370 crore. Even more recently, HAL secured a deal with General Electric for 113 jet-engines to power the programme, signalling deepening capabilities and global tie-ups. In addition, HAL’s footprint in India’s capital region – including potential monetisation of its five-acre Delhi land parcel – hints at operational and financial flexibility to fund expansion and deliver returns. The macro backdrop is supportive too: rising defence budgets, prioritisation of air-force modernisation and increasing export ambitions mean that HAL isn’t just riding a domestic bump — it has a global opportunity as well. On the numbers front, HAL has shown improved profitability and order-book strength, giving investors real visibility. Its status as a “Maharatna” PSUs adds governance and autonomy advantages. From a valuation-perspective: yes, some premium is already priced in given the strategic nature of the business — but if HAL delivers on the fighter-jet programme, engine deliveries, export wins and land monetisation, the upside could be significant. The key is that the bull case isn’t speculative: orders are in place, strategy is clear, scale is meaningful. In short, HAL offers a distinctive combination of structural defence tailwinds, government backing, global-tier partnerships and operational levers (land monetisation, exports) that many industrials don’t have. For a long-term investor willing to ride through the cycles and give time (5-10 years), HAL presents a rare chance to own a “strategic compounding asset” rather than just a commercial business.
