SBFC Finance Ltd – A Steady Progress Story with a Balanced Outlook

SBFC
I adopt a cautious-positive stance on SBFC Finance, recognising the company’s solid operational performance and growth in secured-asset lending, but also noting the need for vigilance on leverage and asset‐quality as it scales up. The firm has quietly built scale in the secured MSME-loan space (loans against property and gold) and delivered good momentum: for example, its AUM rose ~28–30% year-on-year to ~₹87.47 billion at end-March 2025. Profitability is improving: for FY24–25 the company reported revenue of ₹13,067.46 million (~₹1,306.7 crore) versus ~₹10,199.2 million last year and PAT of ₹3,452.99 million (~₹345.3 crore) compared to ~₹2,371.04 million previously. Asset quality remains reasonably controlled with gross NPA around ~2.70% in recent quarters. SBFC has also been affirmed with credit ratings of ‘AA-’ (stable) by major agencies, reflecting strong institutional setup, secured portfolio focus and diversified branch footprint across ~16 states and two UTs. On the improvement side: the company is focusing on expense ratios (operating cost to AUM), with opex to AUM reported at ~4.62% in 9M FY25, down from prior levels, indicating improved operating leverage. Its core business is almost entirely secured (~99% of assets), which gives it greater resilience compared to unsecured lending players. However, despite these positives, I believe some caution is warranted: the leverage (debt/tangible equity) has room to climb as the company intends to scale, and this expansion may strain metrics if not managed carefully. The provision coverage ratio (PCR) remains modest in places, and while NPAs are low today, growth pressure could expose new stress in the small-business/secured-loan book. Also, the valuation seems to assume sustained high growth and margin improvement — which may be challenging if macro or credit conditions deteriorate.
