CG Power’s Chip Bet: Value or Risk?

$CGPOWER CG Power is entering the semiconductor industry through CG Semi, its joint venture with Japan’s Renesas Electronics and Thailand’s Stars Microelectronics. The venture is developing OSAT facilities at Sanand, Gujarat, with a planned investment of over ₹7,600 crore in five years. The G1 facility has begun commercial production and can initially handle about 200–300 million chips annually. The upcoming G2 unit could raise total capacity to nearly 15 million units a day, or over 5 billion chips a year. This move could benefit shareholders by giving CG Power access to rising demand from automobiles, consumer electronics, industrial equipment, 5G and artificial intelligence. It can diversify revenue, strengthen the company’s position in global supply chains and support India’s domestic electronics ecosystem. The partnership with Renesas and Stars provides technical expertise and customer access. Government subsidies, including approved support of about ₹3,501 crore, may also reduce the project’s financial burden. However, the venture is capital-intensive and may pressure earnings during its early years. The semiconductor business reported a loss of ₹107.86 crore in FY26, even as CG Power’s consolidated revenue rose to about ₹12,662 crore and profit reached nearly ₹1,199 crore. Until capacity utilisation improves, depreciation, operating costs and customer qualification expenses could affect margins. Investors should watch project execution, customer additions, utilisation, cash flows and the path to profitability. Delays, weak demand, technology issues or intense competition could reduce returns. Overall, the semiconductor expansion is strategically promising but carries meaningful execution risk. It can create long-term value if the facilities reach scale, but shareholders should expect near-term volatility and avoid valuing the company solely on future capacity targets.
