Cochin Shipyard: ₹21,900 cr order book, but margins missing

COCHINSHIP
Cochin Shipyard (NSE: COCHINSHIP) builds and repairs ships across defence, commercial and export segments via subsidiary Udupi Cochin Shipyard. It is expanding into green tugs via a 40%-owned JV with HBL Engineering on electric maritime propulsion. What happened: Q1 FY27 revenue was ₹1,094.21 crore, up 2.40% YoY but down 26.28% QoQ. PAT fell 19.37% YoY and 45.22% QoQ to ₹151.45 crore. Material costs rose 39.44% YoY to ₹453.26 crore; finance costs more than doubled to ₹25.36 crore. Shipbuilding revenue grew 59.5% YoY to ₹700.04 crore, but ship repair dropped 37.4% YoY to ₹394.17 crore. Revenue grew, but profit fell. Why it matters: The order book stands at ₹21,900 crore: ₹11,900 crore defence, ₹7,200 crore export commercial, ₹1,600 crore domestic commercial and ₹1,200 crore ship repair. FY26 net profit of ₹643 crore was lower than FY25's ₹843 crore despite higher sales. Debt-equity rose to 0.21x in Q1 FY27 from 0.03x a year ago. In September 2026, ICICI Securities downgraded CSL from Buy to Hold with a ₹1,590 target; management guided EBITDA margins moderating to around 14% in FY27 and FY28. My view: The scale is real and the pipeline is deep. But margin compression, higher working capital and rising borrowings are reducing the earnings yield investors expected. At 57.1x PE on 5 October 2026 (closing price ₹1,283.80), the stock prices in a recovery that has not yet arrived. What I am watching: Q2 FY27 ship repair revenue recovery, EBITDA margin trajectory and green-tug delivery ramp under GTTP. My stance: Order book gives comfort on revenue, but earnings quality needs to improve. I am watching from the sidelines until margins stabilise. I do not hold a position in Cochin Shipyard Limited at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.
