Defence Shells, Bigger Bets: Is Goodluck India’s Pivot Paying Off?

$GOODLUCK Goodluck India is turning from a traditional steel tubes and structures maker into a serious defence and solar player, and this shift is reshaping the outlook for its shareholders. The article tracks how the company’s order book in defence has scaled rapidly: management is targeting a jump from about ₹46 crore in FY24 to nearly ₹300 crore at full ramp‑up, driven by artillery shell and aerospace components. Alongside, overall FY26 income is around ₹4,120 crore, with EBITDA of about ₹418 crore and net profit close to ₹183 crore, and Q4 FY26 EBITDA grew nearly 31% year‑on‑year to about ₹122 crore with margins above 11%. This shows that even as defence is nascent, the core business is profitable and capable of supporting growth investments. For shareholders, the defence bet is both exciting and demanding. The company has committed roughly ₹400 crore of capex into Goodluck Defence & Aerospace and artillery shell capacity is being scaled towards 4 lakh shells a year, with management talking of potential revenue of ₹800 crore from artillery and ₹200 crore from aerospace at full capacity, and guided segment EBITDA margins of about 30%. If these numbers materialise, defence can become a high‑margin growth engine, meaning stronger cash flows and a re‑rating beyond a cyclical steel processor. The article also points out that solar structures and transmission lines are growing fast, adding another structural leg. The risk, however, is execution and concentration. Defence is lumpy, tender‑driven and exposed to government and export approvals; a delay in ramp‑up or any policy change can hit earnings. High capex also raises leverage and makes returns sensitive to utilisation. Yet, with capacity utilisation already above 90% in the legacy business and clear visibility on defence orders, the move looks more beneficial than detrimental for long‑term shareholders who can absorb volatility and believe in India’s rising defence and infrastructure outlay.
