Restaurant Brands Asia has aggressively expanded its Burger King footprint in India, with store numbers rising and revenues climbing 16% year-on-year to ₹570 crore in the recent quarter. Yet, the stock is down over 40% since September 2024, leaving shareholders frustrated. Despite growth in new stores and a steady rise in sales, profitability remains elusive.
India's business shows promise, mainly from expansion and menu innovation. Same-store sales growth is modest at 2.8%, while gross margin improved 80 basis points to 68%. However, rising manpower costs and debt-funded expansion have squeezed margins. Labor expenses jumped 18% year-on-year, shrinking EBITDA margin to 13.6%. On a consolidated basis, losses widened to over ₹63 crore, largely due to persistent headwinds in Indonesia.
RBA’s Indonesia segment remains a major drag, with a quarterly loss of ₹43 crore. Despite shutting down underperforming stores, profitability is held back by tough market conditions and intense competition. Popeyes in Indonesia struggles, compounding challenges. Strategic cost-control may save ₹20 crore, but further improvement depends on a stable geopolitical climate.
For shareholders, the company’s value proposition hinges on long-term growth, digital innovation, and the success of new café-style outlets, which are expected to boost margins as they mature. Delivery channel profitability remains low, despite a 16% increase in delivery revenues.
Analysts do not expect the company to reach breakeven until FY28. While future revenue growth looks likely, meaningful shareholder returns will depend on improved operational efficiency and possible divestment in Indonesia. The current price correction has made valuations more comfortable, but the prevailing losses and uncertainty pose significant risks. In summary, the situation is challenging for shareholders—expansion may ensure growth, but persistent losses and Indonesia’s ongoing issues remain clear detriments in the near term.#WatchOutFor#FundamentalViews#EquityResearch
