Zen Technologies: Drone Growth Meets Execution Risk
$ZENTEC Zen Technologies is emerging as a focused play on India’s defence-drone ecosystem. The government has planned drone purchases of ₹20,000 crore through Fast Track Procurement, while the Defence Acquisition Council has approved capital acquisitions worth ₹52,000 crore. The shift toward surveillance and autonomous platforms could widen Zen’s market. Zen has moved beyond military-training simulators to build training systems, drone and counter-drone solutions, and operational equipment. Its simulators helped reduce Agniveer training from 100 weeks to 30 weeks. The company received government contracts worth about ₹800 crore and developed a high-speed interceptor drone capable of destroying hostile drones at a range of 20 km. Early order-book execution affected Q1FY27. Revenue fell to ₹141.6 crore from ₹158.2 crore in Q1FY26. EBITDA declined 33.9% to ₹57.9 crore, while the margin contracted by 1,380 basis points to 40.9%. Net profit dropped 27.8% to ₹34.5 crore. Demand has not yet produced steady growth. Zen is debt-free and held ₹1,217 crore in cash and bank balances as of June 30, 2026. Supplier advances and inventory have stretched working capital to 257 days. Delays could tie up cash. The order book stood at ₹1,239 crore: ₹920.6 crore in equipment and ₹318.4 crore in annual maintenance contracts. Domestic orders accounted for ₹1,153.8 crore and exports ₹85.3 crore. Management targets ₹2,500 crore by FY27-end and ₹4,000 crore revenue across FY27-FY28; simulators should contribute ₹2,000 crore. A potential $10-billion US market offers upside, but validation will take time. Zen offers positioning, cash strength and defence demand. Risks are valuation, working capital, volatility and government dependence. With the reported P/E at 92.7 times versus an industry median of 70 times, expectations are high. The story benefits shareholders if orders generate cash, but hurts them if delays or valuation erode returns. Track execution, cash flows and margins.
