$INDIANB 's Strategic Slowdown Yields Strong Q1 Profit Growth

$INDIANB reported a robust net profit increase of 10% year-on-year to ₹3,273 crore for Q1FY27. This growth was strongly supported by healthy treasury income, which effectively cushioned the impact of higher regulatory provisions. Margin Expansion via Strategic Growth: While its peers faced margin compression due to recent central bank rate cuts, Indian Bank deliberately slowed its lending pace to focus on profitability. This strategy resulted in a 6-basis-point sequential expansion of its net interest margin (NIM). Controlled Lending and High Assets: The bank deliberately limited its credit growth to 15.2% year-on-year—falling below the broader banking system's 17.7% average. It proactively walked away from low-yielding credit exposures and avoided high-cost bulk deposits to protect its margins. Improving Asset Quality: Asset quality metrics showed consistent improvement, with gross non-performing assets (NPAs) falling to 1.86% and net NPAs holding steady at a minimal 0.15%. Credit costs and slippage ratios both remained well under control. Future Guidance and Challenges: Moving forward, deposit mobilization is expected to be the primary constraint on credit growth rather than loan demand, as the bank's credit-deposit ratio has crossed 81%. However, management remains confident, retaining its full-year loan growth guidance of 11–13% and aggressively targeting foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits to secure cheaper funding.
