Jio's ARPU Paradox: Steady Growth vs. Looming Stagnation
$RELIANCE Jio maintains that its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is secure, projecting a 4-5% organic annual growth rate without immediate tariff increases. This comes despite a minor 0.7% sequential bump to ₹215.6 in the June quarter. Skepticism From Industry Experts: Analysts warn that easy organic gains from smartphone upgrades have peaked. Consultancy firms like Techarc emphasize that without explicit price hikes, telecom operators cannot sustain long-term investments, especially given the lack of 5G monetization. Sector-Wide Revenue Squeeze: The sluggish ARPU trend is an industry-wide challenge. Competitors like Bharti Airtel reported a drop in their March quarter ARPU, highlighting the broad pressure operators face following their last major tariff hikes in July 2024. Pivot to Non-Connectivity Sectors: To offset flatlining telecom revenue, Jio Platforms is aggressively scaling its digital services, including cloud computing, content, and IoT. This segment grew 20% year-on-year, significantly outperforming core connectivity growth. Profitability vs. Rising Costs: Although Jio's digital operations offer higher long-term margins through intellectual property, its current quarterly net profit dipped 2.15% sequentially. This decline is attributed to operational expenses, increased finance costs, and heavy 5G infrastructure depreciation
