The Slow and Steady Growth Formula of
INDIANB

INDIANB
deliberately chose to grow slower than the broader banking system during the first quarter of financial year 2027. By consciously sacrificing loan volume expansion, the state-run lender successfully widened its net interest margin by 6 basis points sequentially, successfully resisting the margin compression hitting its peers. Optimizing the Balance Sheet: The bank implemented a dual strategy of shedding low-yielding credit exposures while completely avoiding the costly race for high-interest bulk deposits. Instead, it redirected its focus toward better-priced incremental lending and cheaper market borrowings to strengthen both sides of its balance sheet. Capitalizing on Alternate Funding: To mitigate credit-deposit ratio pressures without accumulating expensive domestic deposits, the bank took advantage of relaxed regulatory norms to secure $150 million in Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits. Management aims to aggressively scale this to $1.5–2 billion over the fiscal year. Proactive Risk Management: The lender is actively front-loading its financial cushioning ahead of the upcoming Expected Credit Loss (ECL) framework implementation in 2027. It has already set aside ₹1,000 crore in floating provisions against its total estimated requirements, effectively shielding future earnings from sudden shocks. Strong Financial Performance: Backed by robust treasury income and sharply improving asset quality (with gross NPAs falling to 1.86%), the bank reported a 10% year-on-year surge in net profit. Analysts project the bank's profitability-first blueprint to sustain an impressive 15–17% return on equity through fiscal year 2029.
