: Inventory Overhang and Pricing Challenges Weigh on Earnings

VOLTAS
’s FY26 is shaping up to be a difficult year, with consolidated revenue expected to decline. The company’s core unitary cooling products (UCP) business has been hit hard by delayed summer onset, extended monsoon, and GST‑related demand deferment. While management commentary suggests demand conditions are gradually improving, profitability remains under strain due to elevated costs and aggressive pricing by competitors. Investors are cautious, awaiting signs of recovery in demand, inventory normalization, and margin stabilization. 1. Revenue Decline in H1FY26 Operating revenue fell 16.6% YoY to ₹6,286 crore in H1FY26. The UCP segment, contributing 65% of revenue, dropped 24% YoY, underscoring weak consumer demand. Seasonal factors and GST deferment were key drags. 2. Demand Outlook and Inventory Levels Management expects Q3FY26 industry decline to be smaller than Q2, aided by pre‑buying ahead of new energy rating norms effective January 1. Channel inventory has eased to 45 days from 60, but remains elevated compared to 20–25 days last year, limiting fresh orders. 3. Market Share Gains Despite Weak Margins Voltas’s RAC market share rose sequentially to 18.5% in Q2FY26, up from 17.8% in Q1 and 16% in Q4FY25. However, higher operating costs and revenue decline led to a 380 bps EBITDA margin drop to 3.96% in H1FY26. 4. Pricing Pressures and Cost Challenges Aggressive competitor pricing in UCP has pressured margins. Voltas is considering pricing actions to offset rising input costs from inflation and rupee depreciation, though management views current industry pricing as unsustainable. Shares have fallen 23% YTD to ₹1,388. Elara Securities maintains an ‘accumulate’ rating with a ₹1,440 target, based on 37x FY27e P/E, citing low RAC penetration, potential demand recovery, and favorable base effects. Risks include muted December sales and prolonged winters impacting Q4.
