Coal India unit SECL plans $800 million IPO

Research Analyst: UJVIN NEVATIA (PROPRIETOR: NEVAT INVESTMENTS) | SEBI Registration No.: INH100009628 Coal India Limited (

COALINDIA
) subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has reportedly hired investment banks for a potential IPO of up to $800 million. The company could file its draft prospectus as early as December 2026. What happened? According to Bloomberg, SECL has appointed ICICI Securities, SBI Capital Markets, Motilal Oswal Investment Advisors and IDBI Capital to manage the proposed issue. Coal India is expected to sell part of its stake. The issue size and timeline remain under discussion. SECL operates 60 coal mines across Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Why does it matter? The proposed IPO is part of Coal India's strategy to list its subsidiaries separately. Mahanadi Coalfields has already filed draft IPO papers, with Coal India proposing to sell up to 66.18 crore shares. Separate listings could establish independent market valuations for these businesses and generate proceeds for the parent company. My view The important distinction is between unlocking shareholder value and raising growth capital. If SECL's IPO is entirely an offer for sale, the proceeds will go to Coal India rather than SECL. The financial benefit to Coal India will depend on the final valuation, stake dilution and how the proceeds are used. SECL's production costs, profitability and mine reserves will be important when assessing its standalone valuation. What I am watching next I would track the draft prospectus, final issue size, stake dilution and SECL's financial disclosures. These will provide a clearer basis for evaluating the proposed listing. No Recommendations Source: NDTV Profit / Bloomberg Disclosure: I, my entity, associates or relatives do not have any holding, position or other material interest in Coal India Limited.
