Uno Minda: EV Components Growing Fast,Margins Under Pressure

Uno Minda (NSE : UNOMINDA) is an automotive component maker supplying switches, lighting, alloy wheels, seating, sensors, controllers, advanced driver assistance systems and aftermarket products. Its EV portfolio covers battery management systems, chargers, DC-DC converters, motor controllers, traction motors and body-control modules. What happened: In Q1FY27, revenue grew 23.8% year on year to Rs 5,557 crore. Operating profit rose only 5.3% to Rs 572 crore; operating margin fell to 10.3% from 12.1%. Net profit grew 2.1% to Rs 316 crore; net profit margin dropped to 5.7% from 6.9%. Commodity and gas-cost inflation, raw-material pass-through lags and higher minimum wages drove the margin compression. Green Mobility revenue was Rs 542 crore, up 78%, contributing about 10% of total revenue. Why it matters: The EV component business is scaling fast. Uno Minda EV Systems contributed Rs 186 crore in Q1FY27; the controller division’s EV segment added Rs 37 crore. The Khed City facility in Pune will begin producing advanced e-axles in H2FY27. Uno Minda also acquired full control of its two-wheeler and three-wheeler EV technology ventures. Export seating orders from European and North American customers have a peak supply potential of Rs 390 crore annually, beginning in FY28. What I am watching: Operating margin at 10.3% is well below the year-ago 12.1%, and net profit grew only 2.1% on 23.8% revenue growth. The margin recovery timeline is uncertain while input costs remain elevated. My stance: The EV portfolio is real and growing fast. But margins are compressing even as revenue scales. Uno Minda (NSE: UNOMINDA) is a diversified auto ancillary supplying lighting, switches, alloy wheels, acoustics, and seating to two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles. Its lighting division -- Rs 1,153 crore in Q1FY27, 21% of revenue -- is shifting from halogen to LED; new PV seating and two-wheeler lighting orders extend its content-per-vehicle story. What happened: Q1FY27 revenue rose 25.7% YoY to Rs 5,557 crore; EBITDA grew 20.7% to Rs 572 crore, but margin fell 40 bps to 10.3%. Net profit rose 22.5% to Rs 316 crore. FY26 revenue reached Rs 19,589 crore, up 17% YoY. It received its first domestic PV lighting order from a global OEM and a two-wheeler lighting order with Rs 450 crore peak revenue potential, production beginning H2FY28. Why it matters: India's auto lighting market grows from $1.83 billion (2026) to $2.44 billion by 2031; AIS-198 and AIS-199 standards are pushing OEMs toward LED. Uno Minda spends Rs 1,750 crore in capex in FY27 with Rs 2,000 crore more earmarked over 8-24 months. FY26 ROE is 17.7% and ROCE is 18.3%. At 52x P/E against a 5-year median of 59.9x, this discount is thin. What I am watching: New lighting order ramp-up, margin recovery from 10.3%, and capex utilisation across 11 expansion projects. My stance: The 25.7% revenue growth and Rs 450 crore two-wheeler order confirms content-per-vehicle. But at 52x P/E -- barely below 59.9x median -- there is little room for execution misses. Margins must recover as capacity absorbs fixed costs. I want one full quarter of margin improvement alongside revenue growth before adding exposure. UNO Minda rebounds after retesting long-term support UNO Minda Limited (NSE: UNOMINDA) was trading around ₹1,284 on September 21 after rebounding from a recent breakout retest. The stock also retested its 200-day SMA, where buying interest emerged, strengthening the short-term technical structure. The Point & Figure chart has formed a Bullish 100% Pole from its 10-column moving average. The 1% Renko chart has also produced a Bullish Swing Engulfing pattern after retesting its 40-brick moving average. The combination of the 200-day SMA retest and bullish signals across Point & Figure and Renko charts gives the setup several independent technical reference points. The key question is whether the rebound develops into sustained follow-through. My view is that ₹1,280-₹1,285 is the important near-term zone.
