PNB
Punjab National Bank (PNB) is one of India's largest public-sector banks, with a diversified loan franchise spanning corporate, MSME, agriculture and retail banking. The bank has been undergoing a multi-year balance-sheet improvement, with stronger provisioning, lower stressed assets and improved capitalisation supporting a significant recovery in profitability. Its large branch network and government-linked deposit franchise provide scale, while continued digitisation and greater focus on retail and MSME lending can support future growth.
FY26 net profit was approximately ₹17,096 crore, compared with ₹17,440 crore in FY25, while book value per share increased strongly to ₹130.49 from ₹108.61. Q1 FY27 showed a sharp reported profit increase: standalone PAT rose 213.6% YoY to ₹5,253 crore, NII increased 2.1% to ₹10,798 crore and RoA improved to 1.04%. Global NIM was 2.50%, while improving asset quality and lower credit costs supported profitability. However, the very high YoY PAT growth is partly due to a weak Q1 FY26 base, when a one-time tax-related charge depressed earnings.
At the latest Groww snapshot, PNB had a market capitalisation of about ₹1.34 lakh crore, P/E of 6.07x, P/B of 0.92x, ROE of 15.13% and dividend yield of 2.57%.
The valuation remains relatively modest compared with many private-sector banks, but PSU-bank discounts reflect concerns around efficiency, asset quality and government ownership. Key risks include margin compression, slower NII growth, credit-cycle deterioration, government influence and the need to maintain asset-quality improvements as loan growth accelerates.
Overall, PNB has moved considerably beyond its earlier stressed-asset phase, with stronger profitability, book-value growth and improving operating metrics; the key monitorable is whether it can sustain around 1%+ RoA and mid-teens ROE while continuing to grow the loan book without compromising asset quality.#FundamentalViews#StockInNews#EquityResearch#HiddenGems#WatchOutFor
