Amazon Ditches Fire Tablets for Premium Alexa Lineup
Amazon has launched its first tablets running full Android, ending the Fire tablet era after more than 15 years. The new Alexa Tablets feature aluminum bodies, higher prices, and built-in Alexa+ assistance. Three models are available. The 8-inch version starts at $230, the 11-inch at $330, and the 12-inch Pro at $500. A special anti-glare Nanomatte version of the Pro costs $550. All offer Google Play Store access, something Fire tablets never had. Previous Fire models often sold for under $180. Alexa+ sits at the heart of the experience. Users can ask questions, control smart home devices, or get personalized help by voice or screen tap. Full generative features require a Prime membership or Alexa+ subscription. Amazon is phasing out Fire tablets and will stop shipping them soon. The new devices begin shipping October 14 in the US, Mexico, and Canada, with Europe following days later. Kids versions of the smaller models are also offered. The company is betting buyers will pay more for better hardware and full Android apps instead of cheap media tablets. Whether the higher prices attract customers remains to be seen.
