Bharat Electronics (BEL): Riding the Defence Order Wave

While the broader indices are trading weaker today, Nifty below 23,700 on elevated crude prices and geopolitical concerns, the defence sector is diverging on positive news flow. The Defence Acquisition Council approved capital procurement worth approximately ₹1.1 lakh crore on September 7, covering radars, jammers, and helicopters, with 98% of sourcing mandated from domestic manufacturers.

BEL
is a direct beneficiary given its exposure to radar and electronic warfare systems within this order. That said, the stock is trading at roughly 42x FY27 estimated earnings, which already reflects much of the sector's structural growth narrative, so the risk-reward here is less about a re-rating catalyst and more about execution against an already-priced-in order book. My view is that BEL remains a reasonable core holding for exposure to India's defence indigenisation theme, but fresh entries on the back of today's announcement carry limited margin of safety given current valuations.
