According to the November 2025 Ericsson Mobility Report, India is expected to exceed one billion 5G subscriptions by the end of 2031, showcasing swift adoption in a market with the highest mobile data usage per smartphone worldwide. Active smartphones are anticipated to see mobile data usage increase from 36 GB monthly to 65 GB monthly by 2031. The report emphasised that by the end of 2025, India had 394 million 5G subscriptions, accounting for 32% of all mobile subscriptions. Mr. Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India, mentioned that 5G is currently functioning as the essential infrastructure facilitating digitalisation. He mentioned that budget-friendly 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) customer equipment and increasing data usage are driving traffic expansion. The report highlighted that mobile network data usage rose by 20% from Q3 2024 to Q3 2025, propelled by India and mainland China, with traffic anticipated to expand at an average annual rate of 16% until 2031. Worldwide, 5G subscriptions are projected to hit 6.4 billion by 2031, representing around two-thirds of all mobile subscriptions, with 4.1 billion anticipated to be 5G standalone connections utilising a dedicated 5G core. The report anticipates that by the end of 2025, 5G networks will manage 43% of mobile data, escalating to 83% by 2031. FWA broadband is projected to continue being a key 5G application, with approximately 1.4 billion individuals globally anticipated to utilise FWA by 2031, and 90% of them will depend on 5G. The research also observed expansion in varied connectivity frameworks facilitated by network slicing, backed by service providers in prominent markets including the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, India, and some Gulf nations. Global 6G subscriptions are estimated to reach 180 million by 2031, with increased adoption possible if commercial rollouts start sooner than past technologies' cycle.
