Biocon Brazil Expansion: 10-Year Biosimilar Deal

Biocon Limited has secured an exclusive 10-year supply contract for Pertuzumab—a biosimilar monoclonal antibody used to treat HER2-positive breast cancer—in Brazil through a consortium with public pharmaceutical laboratory Bahiafarma and biotechnology firm Bionovis. Under Brazil’s Productive Development Partnership (PDP) program, the consortium received a 100% market allocation, granting exclusive access to the country's public healthcare system (Unified Health System or SUS), which commands roughly 70% of Brazil's total demand for the oncology treatment. Throughout the decade-long agreement, Biocon will earn milestone payments and receive a defined share of revenues generated through the public procurement framework. The partnership marks a strategic expansion of Biocon’s commercial footprint in Latin America while addressing a critical, high-cost pharmaceutical need for Brazil, where Pertuzumab is not currently produced locally. Over the medium to long term, the PDP agreement mandates a phased technology transfer to establish local biopharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities within Brazil. By combining Biocon’s biomanufacturing and development expertise with Bahiafarma’s public health reach and Bionovis’ specialized biological capabilities, the collaboration expands global access to complex cancer therapies while advancing Brazil’s domestic production self-reliance.
