Bridging the Valley: How the USBRL Project is Transforming Connectivity and Commerce in Jammu & Kashmir

The complete commissioning of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) now establishes year-round, seamless rail transit connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. Crossing eight districts in Jammu & Kashmir, this landmark corridor features remarkable engineering feats, including the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and India's first cable-stayed rail bridge at Anji Khad. Beyond cutting the travel time between Katra and Srinagar down to roughly three hours, the project significantly elevates mobility, regional tourism, and cargo movement. Local entrepreneurs, artisans, and farmers now enjoy direct access to major domestic markets, making it vastly easier to distribute iconic regional goods like pashmina shawls, handicrafts, apples, and dry fruits. To build upon this connectivity, Indian Railways is expanding the area's logistics framework by launching a Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal (GCT) at Samba alongside preliminary approvals for new terminals in Kathua, Anantnag, and Jammu. Strategic expansions are also underway, including a final location survey for a 190-km railway line connecting Jammu/Reasi to Poonch for better border access, full electrification of the region’s broad-gauge network, and the modernization of four stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Together, these infrastructure upgrades will optimize supply chains, supercharge trade, and accelerate long-term socio-economic development throughout Jammu & Kashmir.
