Essar Group $18 Billion US Steel Plant Plan
Essar Group, through its US subsidiary Mesabi Metallics, plans to invest approximately ₹1.70 lakh crore ($18.00 billion) to construct a major steel plant in Iowa, USA, featuring an annual production capacity of 10 million tonnes. Announced at the White House, the megaproject establishes an integrated supply chain anchored by Essar’s iron ore operations in Minnesota, where the company is separately deploying ₹28,491 crore ($3.00 billion) to develop a new iron ore mine. While US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick estimated the combined mine and steel complex investment at ₹1.67 lakh crore ($17.50 billion), company promoters pegged total outlay at ₹1.70 lakh crore ($18.00 billion), supplying raw materials directly to the upcoming Iowa facility.
Scheduled to commence production around 2030 using advanced steelmaking technologies, the integrated facility will process Minnesota-mined iron ore into finished steel in Iowa for both domestic consumption and global exports. The initiative is projected to generate up to 6,000 construction jobs, create nearly 2,000 permanent manufacturing and mining roles, and contribute an estimated ₹9.022 lakh crore ($95.00 billion) to the US economy. Building on Essar’s presence in Minnesota since 2007—following its acquisition of Minnesota Steel and its 1.4 billion tonnes of iron ore reserves—this venture significantly expands the group’s international footprint across steel, refining, and energy infrastructure.
