India Accelerates Green Hydrogen Adoption Across Major Refineries

The Government of India is accelerating the use of green hydrogen in the petroleum and refining sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), aimed at positioning India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, utilisation and exports. Under the SIGHT Mode 2B scheme, 30 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum (KTPA) of green hydrogen capacity has been allocated across refineries. Indian Oil Corporation’s Panipat refinery has received 10 KTPA, while Bharat Petroleum’s Bina refinery and Hindustan Petroleum’s Vizag refinery have been allocated 5 KTPA each. The remaining 10 KTPA has been awarded to Numaligarh Refineries’ Numaligarh refinery. These projects will be developed through Build Own Operate (BOO) models involving private developers and dedicated investments. The initiative is expected to contribute to India’s clean energy transition by increasing the domestic production and use of green hydrogen in industrial operations. Its adoption in refineries can reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, enhance energy security and support India’s long-term net-zero goals. The expansion of green hydrogen capacity across major refineries is also expected to create demand for emerging clean-energy technologies and strengthen the country’s domestic hydrogen ecosystem, supporting industrial decarbonisation and India’s ambition to become a major player in the global green energy market. $IOC
