India, under a clear focus and vision, is now advancing a Nuclear Energy Mission aimed at achieving around 100 GW of Nuclear Energy capacity by 2047 by leveraging current and emerging technologies through the Make in India initiative and international collaboration, states Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. As per the strategy, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) aims to generate 54 GW of capacity by building multiple new nuclear power plants utilizing domestic Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) and Light Water Reactors (LWRs) in conjunction with global partnerships. To ensure the availability of decentralized and scalable nuclear energy, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is currently focused on the design and development of Small Modular Reactors, including the 200 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor-BSMR-200 and the 55 MWe SMR-55.
India is additionally creating a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor with capacities reaching 5 MW. In line with the FY25 Budget announcement permitting private sector involvement, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has released a request for proposal for establishing “Bharat Small Reactors” based on PHWR technology, with capacities reaching up to 220 MW as Small Reactors. With its technology well-developed for 700 MWe PHWRS and Small Reactors like BSMR-200 and SMR-55, most hardware is accessible to Indian Industries alongside existing indigenous capabilities backed by Research and Development (R&D) efforts in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
