Microsoft Launches Hyderabad Cloud Region

Microsoft has expanded its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure footprint in India with the launch of its fourth cloud region in Hyderabad. Designated as the India South Central region, it joins Microsoft’s existing operational centers in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, establishing the company’s largest hyperscale cloud infrastructure presence in the country. This expansion is part of Microsoft’s previously announced ₹1.94 lakh crore ($20.50 billion) investment commitment in India, directed toward scaling cloud computing, AI infrastructure, enterprise skills development, and operational capacity. Microsoft India and South Asia President Puneet Chandok emphasized that India has reached a critical phase in its digital transformation, establishing itself as one of the largest data-generating nations globally. The initiative addresses a significant infrastructure gap: while India generates nearly 20% of global data, it currently accounts for approximately 3% of world data centre capacity. The country's existing data centre capacity of about 2 GW is projected to expand to 12–14 GW by 2035, driven by enterprise, government, and institutional demand as organizations shift from preliminary AI experimentation to full-scale deployment. The new Hyderabad region is designed to deliver high-performance computing, storage, and cloud availability to support this demand, serving as a critical foundation for India's evolving digital economy and expanding AI ecosystem.
