RIS Study on India's Ayush Services Economy

According to a new study by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) released during the 11th Ayurveda Day celebrations in Nagpur, India’s Ayush services sector reached an estimated economic valuation of ₹3.19 lakh crore ($36.92 billion) in FY25. Based on a nationwide survey of 15,914 establishments across all six traditional medicine systems, the report reveals that the sector expanded at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.91% from FY23, while directly supporting 1.76 million livelihoods—with women comprising 43% of the workforce. Long-term projections indicate the Ayush services economy could scale to ₹20.51–30.20 lakh crore ($216–318 billion) by 2047, contingent on continued investments in infrastructure, quality standardization, digital capabilities, and international accreditation. Union Minister of State for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav emphasized that these metrics confirm Ayush's transition into a high-growth macroeconomic driver. Clinics and day-care facilities form the backbone of the industry, contributing over 71% of total revenues, with standalone clinics generating ₹1.54 lakh crore ($16.21 billion) and day-care hubs producing ₹96,205 crore ($10.13 billion). Among the systems, Ayurveda maintained its dominance, generating ₹1.68 lakh crore ($17.73 billion), or nearly 48% of total sectoral revenue. Meanwhile, the wellness ecosystem—spanning yoga studios, spas, and wellness resorts—registered a 21.29% CAGR, anchored by a 75% two-year surge in yoga center revenues. The sector also captured ₹15,305 crore ($1.77 billion) in Medical Value Travel in FY25, where international patients accounted for 15–25% of hospital revenues despite representing only 5% of overall patient volume; digital visibility and NABH/ISO quality certifications proved pivotal in driving cross-border adoption.
