BHEL profit doubles as margins continue to rise
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (NSE: BHEL) reported Q2 FY27 consolidated net profit of ₹820.94 crore, up 119% year-on-year. Revenue increased 23.8% to ₹9,300.35 crore, while EBITDA margin expanded to approximately 11% from 7.7%. The margin improvement is the most important part of this result. Revenue growth is encouraging, but the sharp increase in profitability suggests that BHEL is also improving how efficiently it converts revenue into operating earnings. This matters because BHEL operates in a project-driven business. Revenue depends on project execution, while profitability can vary with the mix of projects completed and the costs incurred during execution. The company is benefiting from investment in India's power infrastructure. Thermal power generation, transmission equipment and industrial electrification are creating demand for large engineering and manufacturing companies. However, I would not extrapolate 119% profit growth into the next quarter. Such a sharp increase can be difficult to sustain, particularly when project timing and execution costs affect quarterly earnings. The key question is whether BHEL can maintain its improved margins as revenue scales further. A strong order pipeline creates an opportunity, but consistent execution is what ultimately determines earnings quality. My view: This is an encouraging quarter because profit growth has been accompanied by revenue growth and better operating margins. I would give more weight to the sustainability of the 11% EBITDA margin than to the headline profit growth. What I am watching next: - Whether EBITDA margin stays around 10% to 11% in Q3 FY27. - Revenue growth and execution of the company's project pipeline. - Whether operating cash flow improves alongside reported profitability. Stance: Cautiously constructive. Sustained margin improvement would strengthen the case for continued earnings growth.
