Sugar stocks fall up to 6% as ethanol diversion stops

Indian sugar stocks came under pressure on 19 October after the government directed oil marketing companies to reduce sugar diversion for ethanol production to zero for the 2026-27 supply year. What happened? The latest ethanol tender excludes supplies derived from sugarcane juice, syrup and B-heavy molasses. Shares of several sugar producers fell between 2% and 6% during morning trade. The move is intended to increase domestic sugar availability and ease price pressures, with sugar prices having risen by more than 10% recently. My analysis This is not simply a negative headline for the entire sugar industry. It changes the economics of how producers allocate sugarcane and its by-products between sugar and ethanol. Companies with significant exposure to ethanol capacity could face lower flexibility in feedstock allocation and potentially weaker returns on those investments. At the same time, greater sugar availability could put pressure on domestic realisations. The net impact will vary by company, depending on its product mix, ethanol capacity, inventory and cost structure.
