BSE replaces Wipro in Nifty 50

BSE Limited will enter the Nifty 50, replacing Wipro. The change will become effective September 30, 2026, following the semi-annual review by NSE Indices. Why is BSE getting included? The key criterion is free-float market capitalisation. BSE's six-month average free-float market cap has become at least 1.5 times that of Wipro, which is currently the smallest Nifty 50 constituent. What does it mean for BSE? This is clearly a positive development for BSE. Nifty 50 inclusion generally creates additional demand from index-tracking passive funds because they have to adjust their portfolios to reflect the new index composition. The Nifty 50 is tracked by passive funds managing roughly $97 billion, according to Reuters. BSE shares gained around 4% after the announcement, taking their 2026 gain to about 37%. What about Wipro? For Wipro, the immediate impact is more negative from a flow perspective. Once it exits Nifty 50, passive funds tracking the index will need to reduce their Wipro exposure and allocate that money toward the incoming constituent. However, this does not automatically mean Wipro's fundamentals have changed. The stock has already been under pressure, with Reuters reporting a roughly 29.5% decline over the past year. Market takeaway BSE: Positive → higher visibility + potential passive/index-linked buying Wipro: Negative → potential passive outflows + continued pressure on IT sentiment Nifty 50: Index-level impact should be relatively limited because this is mainly a constituent replacement, not a fundamental change in the overall index. Important date: September 30, 2026 — that's when the new composition takes effect. $BSE !wipro
