# CSB Bank: Reducing Dependence on Gold Loans
CSB Bank is a private-sector lender with a strong presence in gold loans, alongside retail, SME and corporate banking. Gold-backed lending has been a major contributor to its loan portfolio.
**What is changing?**
The bank is looking to diversify its lending mix by expanding wholesale and small-business lending. Gold loans accounted for around 54% of its loan portfolio in Q1 FY27, making diversification an important strategic priority.
**Why does this matter?**
Gold loans are secured by pledged gold, but concentration in one lending segment exposes a bank to segment-specific risks. Expanding SME and corporate lending could diversify interest income and create additional growth opportunities. However, these segments require careful credit assessment and risk management.
**Financial performance:** In Q1 FY27, CSB Bank’s net profit increased 27% year-on-year to ₹150 crore, while net interest income rose 26% to ₹479 crore. Net advances grew 24% to ₹40,309 crore. The net interest margin was 3.66%, down from 3.83% in the previous quarter.
**What investors should track**
* Gold loans as a percentage of total advances
* Growth in SME and wholesale lending
* Net interest margin (NIM) and deposit costs
* Gross and net non-performing assets (NPAs)
* Credit costs and return on assets (ROA)
**Key takeaway:** CSB Bank’s next phase of growth will depend on diversifying its loan portfolio while maintaining asset quality and profitability. Investors should monitor whether new lending segments can grow sustainably without weakening credit standards.
