Aurobindo buys US CRDMO lab A1 Biochem for $15.2M

Aurobindo Pharma's subsidiary Apitoria acquired US-based A1 Biochem Labs for USD 15.24 million in an all-cash deal. This secures onshore R&D facilities in North Carolina to drive its high-margin CRDMO expansion. The acquisition integrates A1 Biochem's front-end custom synthesis with Apitoria's commercial API production. While the standalone US entity saw turnover dip to USD 5.92 million in 2025, the wider group generated a robust 45.4% EBITDA margin on ₹102.44 crore revenue in FY26. This matters because it establishes a physical laboratory foothold closer to premium US biotech clients without adding debt to Aurobindo's balance sheet. I am watching the Q3 FY27 earnings call for the first consolidated revenue contribution from this US lab and the timeline for cross-selling Apitoria's commercial API pipeline to A1 Biochem's existing biotech clients. The market is likely to dismiss this USD 15.2 million acquisition as a rounding error for a giant like Aurobindo, focusing instead on the target's standalone revenue contraction in 2025. What the consensus is missing is the structural multiple expansion this enables. Aurobindo is transitioning from a pure-play, volume-driven API manufacturer to an integrated Contract Research, Development, and Manufacturing Organization (CRDMO). By acquiring physical onshore US labs, Aurobindo bypasses the geopolitical friction of offshoring early-stage R&D. The real edge here is the 45.4% EBITDA margin of the wider A1 Biochem group; it proves the underlying business model is highly profitable despite the 2025 top-line blip. The market is mispricing this as a standard capacity addition, ignoring that it is a cash-funded Trojan horse to re-rate the Apitoria subsidiary's valuation multiple. Accumulate for long-term CRDMO multiple re-rating. Disclosure: I do not hold positions in this stock. This is for educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice.
