Reliance plans ₹1 lakh crore AP biogas plant investment

Reliance Industries announced a ₹1 lakh crore investment to build compressed biogas plants in Andhra Pradesh. This massive capital allocation expands its green energy footprint and integrates rural agricultural supply chains into its core operations. The commitment scales up a prior 2024 MoU, targeting organic waste and Napier grass utilization to create 3 lakh jobs and an estimated ₹60,000 crore in state revenue. This matters because it secures a captive, long-term alternative fuel resource base, complementing RIL's Q1 FY27 consolidated revenue growth of 25.4% to ₹3.12 lakh crore. I am watching the phased commissioning metrics of the initial Kanigiri plant by Q4 FY27, and the specific capital deployment schedule for the first 50 plants to validate feedstock procurement efficiency. When analyzing this roadmap, I looked at RIL's historical capital allocation in O2C and telecom versus the unit economics of decentralized bio-energy. The market currently prices RIL primarily on its legacy oil-to-chemicals margins and Jio retail dominance. What the consensus misses is the structural margin defense and valuation re-rating this specific biogas model offers. Unlike capital-intensive solar manufacturing, compressed biogas leverages low-cost, localized agricultural feedstock that is often waste-derived or subsidized. By locking in state-level fiscal incentives like capital subsidies and SGST reimbursements, RIL is building a high-ROCE, annuity-like energy business that directly hedges against global crude volatility. The market views this as distant ESG spending, ignoring the immediate supply chain moat it creates against imported natural gas. Accumulate for long-term green energy valuation re-rating.
