India Launches First Tokenised Corporate Bond in Sep

RECLTD
(RECLTD) successfully issued India's first pilot tokenised corporate bond on September 7, raising ₹500 crore under SEBI's Regulatory Sandbox Framework, with bids worth ₹796 crore, nearly 8 times oversubscribed. The bond carries a 7.30% annual coupon for a tenure of 1 year 9 months, using distributed ledger technology and RBI's wholesale CBDC for settlement. Since "tokenisation" gets used loosely without a clear explanation of what it actually does. 1. Tokenisation means representing a real financial asset digitally on a distributed ledger. Here, ownership of REC's bond gets recorded through a new system called Demat 2.0, rather than through traditional settlement processes alone. 2. The real value tested here is settlement speed and efficiency, not the bond itself. The pilot achieved same-day bidding, payment, allotment, and exchange listing, a genuine operational improvement over conventional multi-day settlement cycles, executed through NSE's EBP platform. 3. REC was chosen deliberately as a low-risk test case. As a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power, already regulated as an NBFC and public financial institution, REC offered a controlled environment to trial the technology before extending it more broadly. Worth being clear-eyed about the pilot's real limits. Participation is restricted to selected investors, the bonds carry a three-month lock-in, and secondary-market trading won't begin until exchanges build the mechanism for it, targeted for December 2026. Larsen & Toubro is reportedly already planning its own tokenised bond issue, suggesting other companies are watching this pilot closely. The takeaway: This is a genuine infrastructure milestone, faster, more transparent bond settlement actually demonstrated in practice, but it remains an early-stage, restricted pilot. Worth tracking as a real technology test, not as evidence that tokenised products are now broadly available or automatically superior to traditional ones.
