Titan: Jewellery Stocks Rally Despite 13% Gold Price Rise

TITAN
(TITAN) and other jewellery stocks surged today, with the broader jewellery sector up sharply, even as gold prices have risen 13% over the past month. Jewellery majors reported average revenue growth of 35% year-on-year in the June quarter, and key jewellery makers have delivered average returns of around 50% over both the past six months and the past year. At first glance, this looks backwards. Rising gold prices should mean higher costs for jewellers and, presumably, fewer customers willing to buy. Here's why the actual relationship is more complicated. 1. Gold isn't just a raw material for jewellers, it's also what customers are buying as an investment. When gold prices rise, some demand shifts toward jewellery specifically because of its dual appeal, wearable, but also seen as a store of value, which can offset the volume pressure that pricier gold would otherwise create. 2. Revenue can grow even if volume growth slows, because gold itself costs more. A company selling the same number of grams of gold jewellery earns more revenue when gold prices rise, since the value of what's sold rises with it, even without necessarily selling more pieces. 3. Elevated gold prices create near-term volume headwinds, but structural demand remains intact. Cultural anchoring around gold for weddings and festivals, rising consumer affluence, and gold's investment appeal all provide underlying support, even during periods when higher prices might otherwise be expected to dampen buying. The takeaway: A rising input cost doesn't automatically hurt every company that uses that input, especially when the product itself is also valued as an investment. For jewellery retailers, elevated gold prices can pressure volumes short-term while still supporting revenue and stock performance, since the material driving up costs is the same one making the product more valuable to buy.
