India’s Sugar Story: From Surplus to Shortage
India’s sugar story changed faster than the market expected.
A few months ago, the government was worried about too much sugar and allowed exports to clear surplus stocks. Then production estimates weakened, cane availability fell, recovery rates suffered, and domestic sugar prices surged.
That created a very different problem: not enough sugar at the right time.
The important lesson is that sugar is not simply a production story. Weather, cane quality, farmer economics, mill profitability, ethanol allocation, exports, imports and government policy can all change the equation.
And policy can move in both directions. The government has now allowed 10 lakh tonnes of duty-free raw-sugar imports until October 31 and tightened inventory limits to cool prices. Sugar prices have already started correcting from their recent record levels.
For investors, this makes the sector interesting but highly cyclical.
