Coal India signs MoU with Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan
Coal India and Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan (HURL) have executed a Non-Binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 29, 2026 for exploring the development of a Coal Gasification based Urea Production at Sindri, Jharkhand.
Under this Non-Binding MoU, initially the focus shall be to assess the technical, commercial, and implementation modalities of the project and to facilitate preparation of a Preliminary Feasibility Report (PFR) for evaluating project viability.
Impact : This directly advances Coal India’s ₹50,000-crore mega-diversification roadmap. By transitioning from pure-play mining to value-added chemical and fertilizer production, CIL is building a strategic buffer against future global thermal coal downcycles.
View : Partnering with HURL reduces execution risks due to their strong financial health, highlighted by a ₹1,382.07 crore Profit After Tax (PAT) in FY25. This financial stability ensures robust operational and financial backing for the joint project upon a successful feasibility report.
