PETRONET LNG — INDIA'S GAS DEMAND IS BUILDING

PETRONET
India needs more energy. But it also needs cleaner energy. And LNG sits right in the middle of that transition. Petronet LNG is one of the key pieces of India's LNG infrastructure, operating the Dahej LNG terminal and the Kochi terminal. And the story is getting bigger. The Dahej terminal's capacity has now expanded from 17.5 MMTPA to 22.5 MMTPA, creating additional capacity to handle India's growing LNG requirements. But capacity alone isn't the story. Higher utilisation → More LNG throughput → Better asset productivity → Stronger earnings. And despite lower LNG volumes in Q1 FY27, Petronet delivered a 33% YoY increase in standalone PBT to ₹1,514 crore, while PAT also jumped 33% to ₹1,133 crore. The company attributed the improvement to commercial and operational efficiency. That's important. Because Petronet's business model is fundamentally infrastructure-led. Build terminal → Contract capacity → Process LNG → Earn regasification income → Generate cash. And India's energy mix provides the long-term tailwind. Natural gas can play an important role in industries such as fertilisers, city gas, power, refining and industrial manufacturing, while LNG infrastructure becomes increasingly important as domestic gas production alone cannot satisfy all requirements. Then comes the next opportunity. Petronet is also pursuing additional LNG infrastructure, including the proposed Gopalpur terminal, while the company has been expanding its regasification capabilities at Dahej. The potential flywheel is simple: More gas demand → More LNG imports → Higher terminal utilisation → More throughput → Better earnings visibility. And there is another attractive feature. Petronet's business is far less dependent on predicting the price of LNG than a commodity producer would be. It provides the infrastructure through which LNG moves. That's a very different business model.
