# Axis Bank: Can SME Lending Drive the Next Phase of Growth?
Axis Bank is one of India’s major private-sector banks, with businesses spanning retail banking, corporate lending, credit cards, payments and wealth management.
**What is changing?**
Axis Bank is expanding its presence in small business banking (SBB), small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and mid-corporate lending. In Q1 FY27, advances grew 19% year-on-year, while SME loans increased 25% and corporate loans rose 38%.
**Why does this matter?**
SME and business lending can diversify the bank’s loan portfolio beyond traditional retail products. However, faster credit growth must be supported by sound underwriting, adequate provisions and stable asset quality.
**The key factor to watch: Net interest margin (NIM).**
NIM measures the difference between interest earned on loans and investments and interest paid on deposits, relative to earning assets. Axis Bank reported a NIM of 3.46% in Q1 FY27. Deposit costs, competition for savings and term deposits, and changes in lending rates can influence future margins.
**What investors should track**
* SME and corporate loan growth
* Deposit growth and cost of funds
* Net interest margin (NIM)
* Gross and net non-performing assets (NPAs)
* Credit costs and return on equity (ROE)
**Key takeaway:** Axis Bank’s growth trajectory depends on balancing loan expansion with deposit mobilisation, margin stability and disciplined risk management. Sustainable growth in profitability and asset quality will be important indicators to monitor.
